Explain two ways the characters and/or events in the extract fit the action adventure genre.
The main character of Captian Jack Aubrey, fits the typical action-adventure protagonist role as throughout the clip, this is because the shots focus on his expressions frequently. This means he is a main character as the focus is towards what he is experiencing. He is portrayed as "good" as he doesn't look 'look' menacing which stereotypically makes him the protagonist, which every action-adventure film has as a main character. The events also fit the typical action-adventure brief as on every film/episode that has the genre of action-adventure, there is always a fight against "good and evil" which this clip shows as their are two ships having a battle. The action sequence also follows the typical action film as the fighting has lots of explosions and the camera has a "shaking" movement as we watch Captian Aubrey direst his crew, which simulates the audience being involved with the action as well. All these are typical elements of a action-adventure film.
Explain how each of the following is used to create effects that fit the action adventure
The effect that Establishing shot has on the audience is that it lets the audience focus on what is going on in the scene instead of focusing on how the camera is moving. This is shown in the clip when Captain Aubrey quickly turns the ship left with the camera facing the front of the ship.

The Hurt Locker Questions
Explain two ways the
characters and/ or events fit the action adventure genre.
William James
fits the typical action-adventure protagonist role as the film is from his
point of view which this scene proves. He appears "good" as in this scene he is trying to disarm a bomb attached to a innocent citizen. This makes him appear as a protagonist as he had a good nature to help to remove and diffuse he bomb from the civilian. The scene also features a military force which James appears to be a part of, this is a typical action-adventure convention as Army themes have lots of military action in them as it is usually a fight against "good" and "evil" so they are commonly used for action-adventure films.
Explain how each of the following is used to create effects:
The effect that Establishing shot has on the audience is that it sets the scene and makes the audience feel aware of what going on around the main character such as James. During this clip, a lot of Point Of View shots are used, these make the audience feel more involved with the event of trying to remove the bomb and makes the audience understand what James is experiencing. Hand-held-camera shots are the majority of camera shots used throughout the scene as it creates a dramatic effect. This also makes the audience feel as if they were watching what was happening as if they were "in" the scene themselves.
The clip uses synchronous sounds as there was a explosion sound when the bomb went off to create a realistic affect for the audience. There is also a sound of the engine of a Army Truck at the start of the clip, this also makes it more realistic to the audience so the film would be more believable. The clip uses Diegetic Sounds of dialogue, this makes the film more interesting for the audience and also makes it clear to what is going on. The clip also uses a lot of background silence throughout the scenes, this creates tension as the audience doesn't know what to expect next which keeps them very engaged in the scene.
The mise en scene is very military styled as the clip is from a Military Action film. The actors are wearing Army uniforms to portray their role realistically and military vehicles are seen in the background to make the military scene more believable. The set looks like a damaged deserted city which is a consequence of war which relates to the Military Action Adventure genera of the film. The lighting is ambient which creates a outdoor natural light which is effective as the scene is set in outdoor daylight. The actors that are seen by the camera who are playing the other military members of the group James is apart of are mostly male, this fits the stereotypical Military gender ratios, as stereotypically there are more males in the Army than females.
The director uses Shot-reverse-shot a lot during the clip, this is shown when the army soldiers are looking or shouting at the suicide bomber

Explain how each of the following is used to create effects.
Explain how each of the following is used to create
effects.
The effect that
Establishing shot has on the audience is that it sets the scene and makes the
audience feel aware of what going on around the main character. When cage is
fighting in the battle, a lot of Point Of View shots are used, these make the
audience feel more involved with the film and understand what the main
character is experiencing. Steadicam shots are also used during the battle and
as the majority of camera shots used throughout the film. These achieve a
smooth shot of the action and what’s going on in the scene. Hand-held-camera
shots are used as well during the fighting which creates a contract against the
Steadicam, this makes the audience feel more involved with the action. This is
because it makes them feel like they are watching what is happening as if they
are “in” the action. Jump shots are used to create a ‘hectic’ feeling of the
action and to show how chaotic the battle scene is. This makes the action seam
more realistic to the audience.
The film uses synchronous
sounds during the fight scene to create a realistic effect for the audience it
has sound effects for explosions, gun shots, the sound of the movement of the
Armour and the military vehicles which are all elements of an army styled
action sequence. This makes the action appear more realistic and believable. The many action sequences in the film use the
same non-diegestic background music as well as the synchronous sounds to create
a dramatic impactful atmosphere as it makes the battle very intense. During the
battle, Cage and Rita meet for the first time when Cage explains to her that he
is trying to save her because he knows the crashed plane she is near is about
to explode and that he is from the future and knows the battle will not be successful.
Using these diegetic sounds for dialogue makes the battle scenes have a point and
fit the plot as each time he is trying to find her to tell her what he knows,
this also makes the scenes useful as well as being used for showing the battle.
The film also uses sound bridges as when we see Cage and other soldiers in
battle equipment standing in a plane, the audience hears the usual White Noise
sounds of a plane flying through the air. This makes the audience assume that
Cage and the other soldiers are on their way to the battle. The audience also
hears the same White Noise sounds when the plane is exploding and revealing the
battlefield below which we assume Cage is about to land in on the next scene.
This makes it easier for the audience to understand the plot as when they see
the plane exploding, the same White Noise sounds communicate that the plane is exploding
while still moving through the air which makes the audience know that the two
scenes link and follow on from one another.
The film uses
mise-n-scene to make the ‘Militarily locations’ of the film look realistic and believable.
During the battle scene, Cage and all the other soldiers are wearing battle
armour and the audience can see military
vehicles in the background. The battlefield is a large vast beach with trenches
in it which is common to see on a battlefield. The lighting looks very mundane
as it is dull ambient daylight as the battle looks like it is taking place in the
afternoon or morning with a cloudy sky so the lighting fits the weather realistically.
The makeup the soldiers, Cage and Rita are wearing makes them looks muddy, sweaty
and with cuts and blood on their face, which are extremely common if they were
fighting a battle. All of these are common elements of an action film and makes
the battle look realistic which engages and pleases the audience.

Exam Questions
Explain two ways the characters and/ or events fit the action adventure genre.
The main character fits the typical action-adventure protagonist role as throughout the film, it is from his (William Cage's) point of view, making him the main character as he is the centre of attention. His personality is portrayed as "good" which makes him the protagonist, which every action-adventure film has as the main character. The events also fit the typical action-adventure brief as on every film/episode that has the genre of action-adventure, there is always a fight against "good and evil" which this clip shows. I know this film follows this as the clip shows William in a military battle against Aliens which we assume as evil as Cage is fighting against them. The action sequence also follows the typical action film as the fighting has lots of explosions and the camera has a "shaking" movement as we watch cage with simulates the audience being involved with the action as well. The camera also features first person angels as if we were Cage as he is in the action, which shows the deaths of other soldiers around Cage, this is typical action-adventure.

Discuss the ways in which people are represented in the
extract.
The way
William Cage is presented is in the stereotypical way of an action-adventure
hero and protagonist. He is presented as the main character who is brave as he
fights in an army battle for his first time even though he never wanted to in
the first place. He is shown as brave because he realises he has no choice but
to try and kill the Aliens; which he ties to instead of fleeing the battle. He
is also shown as kind because he tries to help other comrades in the fight by also
killing the Aliens. He is also shows compassion as when he sees Rita get killed
in the battle, he looks shocked and distressed by her death, even though he
didn’t know her, this shows he feels sorry for her that she met a horrible
death. When Cage fights the Aliens he succeeds in killing them so this gives
him the “hero” stereotype. All these traits are what stereotypical action
adventure protagonists have so this makes William appear as “good” and a
“hero”.
The
character of Rita also has the action-adventure “hero” element as she kills and
fights a lot of Aliens successfully, she goes against gender stereotypes as she
appears “strong”, “powerful” and “brave” when the audience see her fight the
Aliens. This goes against the stereotypical female role of being the “damsel in
destress” as the audience see her fight when Cage is taking cover on the floor
watching Rita. She appears as a
“brave knight” when fighting the Aliens and Cage being the “damsel in destress”
by being helpless on the floor. This is
against the stereotypical gender roles when the male is the “brave knight” and
the female is the “damsel in destressed” so this shows role reversal. This also
shows us Rita has a strong and courageous personality.

Compare how and why two programmes were scheduled on different channels ANSWER
Bad Education is a British sitcom produced by Tiger Aspect Productions for BBC Three. It started on the 14th August 2012 and finished on the 21st October 2014. It was on at 10 o'clock on Thursday nights on BBC Three.
The main character in bad education is Mr Wickers, he is goofy and funny which makes the audience like him. He deals with simple situations in a comical way which makes them more complicated, this pleasures the audience as they would laugh at him and keep watching the different episodes as they want to see what he gets into next. The target audience would be teenagers 15+ because the different characters in the class all represent different teenager stereotypes, which the audience can relate to so this appeals them as it makes them feel involved with the plot and can relate to it.
It is on at 10 o'clock because it features adult humour which is not suitable for before the watershed. It features adult themes which is why it is on after the 9 o'clock watershed.

Friday Night Dinner is a British television sitcom which is about the regular dinner experience of a British Jewish family (the Goodmans) on each Friday night. The charters in the family are very "normal" and very relatable to the audience so this pleasures them. The family is a very stereotypical family but the episodes always have a twist like a unexpected event happens during the dinner. This makes the episodes different and humours with also pleasures the audience and keeps them watching the episodes.
It is on at 10 o'clock because it features some humour which is not suitable for before the watershed. It also could be because by 10'clock, most families would have finished their own dinner as the tradition time is from 6-8 o'clock. This means the viewers would be able to watch the program in the free time they have after their dinner.
