Exam Questions

Explain two ways the characters and/ or events fit the action adventure genre.

The main character fits the typical action-adventure protagonist role as throughout the film, it is from his (William Cage's) point of view, making him the main character as he is the centre of attention. His personality is portrayed as "good" which makes him the protagonist, which every action-adventure film has as the main character. The events also fit the typical action-adventure brief as on every film/episode that has the genre of action-adventure, there is always a fight against "good and evil" which this clip shows. I know this film follows this as the clip shows William in a military battle against Aliens which we assume as evil as Cage is fighting against them. The action sequence also follows the typical action film as the fighting has lots of explosions and the camera has a "shaking" movement as we watch cage with simulates the audience being involved with the action as well. The camera also features first person angels as if we were Cage as he is in the action, which  shows the deaths of other soldiers around Cage, this is typical action-adventure.

Discuss the ways in which people are represented in the extract.

The way William Cage is presented is in the stereotypical way of an action-adventure hero and protagonist. He is presented as the main character who is brave as he fights in an army battle for his first time even though he never wanted to in the first place. He is shown as brave because he realises he has no choice but to try and kill the Aliens; which he ties to instead of fleeing the battle. He is also shown as kind because he tries to help other comrades in the fight by also killing the Aliens. He is also shows compassion as when he sees Rita get killed in the battle, he looks shocked and distressed by her death, even though he didn’t know her, this shows he feels sorry for her that she met a horrible death. When Cage fights the Aliens he succeeds in killing them so this gives him the “hero” stereotype. All these traits are what stereotypical action adventure protagonists have so this makes William appear as “good” and a “hero”.

The character of Rita also has the action-adventure “hero” element as she kills and fights a lot of Aliens successfully, she goes against gender stereotypes as she appears “strong”, “powerful” and “brave” when the audience see her fight the Aliens. This goes against the stereotypical female role of being the “damsel in destress” as the audience see her fight when Cage is taking cover on the floor watching Rita. She appears as a “brave knight” when fighting the Aliens and Cage being the “damsel in destress” by being helpless on the floor.  This is against the stereotypical gender roles when the male is the “brave knight” and the female is the “damsel in destressed” so this shows role reversal. This also shows us Rita has a strong and courageous personality.
